SHIV SINGH

Art washes from the soul, the dust of everyday life. Driving amidst the din of traffic in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, if your attention is caught by striking sculptures on roundabouts or in the precincts of Surajkund, Panjabi University, Phillaur Police Academy,  PunjabBhawan, Leisure Valley, Rose Garden, Lake Club, etc., and if you sense the grime of daily living being cleansed for a few precious moments, it is Punjab’s artist and sculptor Shiv Singh you have to thank. His paintings, especially his stylised ‘Tantra’ series, adorn the walls of many museums, govt. and public sector organizations, and are part of international private collections as well. Sculptor, painter, designer, teacher, founder member of the Punjab Lalit Kala Academy, and close collaborator with the Late Dr.M.S.Randhawa in setting up the Punjab Arts Council, Shiv Singh is a multi-faceted artist whose contribution to art in Punjab has continued unabated for almost six decades.

Hoshiarpur-born Shiv Singh gained acclaim soon after graduating from Punjab College of Arts, when he won the first prize for sculptures at the All India Arts Exhibition held at Amritsar and the SahityaAkademiAward for his illustrations of the poet Shiv Kumar Batalvi’s book, both  in 1965. A scholarship to Germany followed, which launched him in the international arena, with 70 solo exhibitions down the years in Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Scotland, Canada and England, and participation in group exhibitions notably at the Third, Fourth and Fifth Triennale, and Festival of India in USSR and Germany.Among his many awards are the National Award in Sculpture in 1979 and the President of India’s Silver Plaque for the best exhibit of the year 1982 at the All India Exhibition at New Delhi.

Shiv Singh disseminated knowledge as Professor of Art in the Govt. Home Science College, Chandigarh till his retirement in 1996, and has thereafter continued to work tirelessly to promote art, especially sculpture, in North India. His participation in and organisation of numerous sculptors camps in the country has enabled sharing of ideas, creativity and   technical prowess. In 1999 he was elected to the Central Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi, from the artist constituency of the five northern states, and served as a committee member in the 10thTriennale held in 2001 at Delhi. As a member of the advisory committees of the Govt. Museum and Art Gallery, the NZCC, Patiala, and the All India Radio Station, Jalandhar, he has provided valuable inputs for the promotion of art in the region and broadcasted several talks on art from AIR, Jalandhar and Chandigarh.During his stint as chairman of the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Academy from 1999 till 2005, he gallantly arranged two fund-raiser exhibitions at the Govt. museum for the Kargil Heroes National fund and the Tsunami Tragedy fund.

In recognition of his excellence, Shiv Singh has been honoured by the House of Commoms, in Toronto , Canada. In 1979, the Punjab Arts Council honoured him as a leading artist; in 1988 the Governor of Punjab felicitated him; in 1991, the Governor of Haryana presented him with a silver plaque at the SurajKund Crafts Mela for his excellence with metal objects;  Doordarshan Jalandhar has honoured him with the Punj –paniaward, and as a Senior Artist of Punjab. In 2008 the ICCR commended his meritorious services in popularising Indian art and Culture amongst art lovers across the world. In   2010 he was awarded the ‘BebhutiSamman’, and the Chief Minister of Punjab felicitated him at the State-level function on Independence Day in 2011. Doordarshan, Siti Cable (Chandigarh), and Alpha /Zee TV have televised fifteen documentary films on him and his works.

Presently Shiv Singh  is working as President of Creators Group of Artists, Haryana. He continues to paint and sculpt with untiring zeal, and recently attended three artists workshops at NZCC, Chandigarh, Kurukshetra and WZCC at Goa.

Shiv Singh was honoured with Amrita Sher-Gil Samman by Chandigarh Kalit Kala Akademi in 2013.
