Nek Chand Saini is an Indian self-taught artist, famous for building the Rock Garden of Chandigarh, a forty-acre sculpture garden in the city of Chandigarh, India. His family moved to Chandigarh in 1947 during the Partition. At the time, the city was being redesigned as a modern utopia by the Swiss/French architect Le Corbusier. It was to be the first planned city in India, and Nek Chand found work there as a roads inspector for the Public Works Department in 1951.
One day 36 years ago, Nek Chand, a humble transport official in the north Indian city of Chandigarh, began to clear a little patch of jungle to make himself a small garden area. He set stones around the little clearing and before long had sculpted a few figures recycled from materials he found at hand. Gradually Nek Chand's creation developed and grew; before long it covered several acres and comprised of hundreds of sculptures set in a series of interlinking courtyards.

September 12th, 2009Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi launched its website www.lalitkalachandigarh.com on 29th August 2009 in the Presence of Padma Bhushan Professor B. N. Goswamy, artist fraternity, art lovers, art critics and known personalities from the field of theatre, music and literature at its office in State Library 34A, Chandigarh, India. The website was projected on a large screen for viewing it online for the large gathering. Some of the luminaries present were Neelam Mansingh Chowdhury, Kamal Tewari, Prabhat Singh, Manju Jaidka, Harish Bhatia, Rupinder Singh, Shiv Singh, Malkit Singh, S. Raj Kumar and Kamal Arora.
Chairman of Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi, Diwan Manna, shared with the audience that it is the first Akademi in this region to have its own website. The best thing about the site is that it is an elaborate, easily accessible, aesthetically designed and executed site- perhaps one of the best in its category and has been designed by one of the well known web design companies.
The website is designed to make information available, on the net, for a global viewer ship about art, its creators, related activities and events from the tricity of Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali.
He further stated that this is a large website with features such as Artists’ directory- with art works, profiles and addresses of artists from the city; past and future events of the Akademi; Scholarship holders’ works, profiles and names of the sponsors; Memorabilia items produced by the Akademi; pictorial representation of the already organized Events; Exhibitions; Collections of the Akademi; Workshops; Videos of the lectures and events held; Online Journal; Press coverage; downloadable Forms for Applications; info about other art galleries, museums, and art institutes in the tricity; related links to important museums and art institutes of the world and a special feature which will keep changing - Featured Artist.
The first featured artist on the home page of the site is none other than the legendary Nek Chand.
Prof. Goswamy spoke about the need, role, purpose and importance of intelligently designed websites in today’s world. He stressed on the urgency and constant up gradation of websites to keep them alive and the interest of viewers intact. He also appreciated the quality, content and design of the site while congratulating the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi for its efforts. He went on to say that this has the potential of becoming one of the great sites among all the sites related to art institutes, academies and cultural centers.
It is now a well established fact that creation of websites has given a boost to the development of art and artists, both, in getting art appreciators and buyers and reaching to different parts of the world without physically taking the works of art to different corners of the globe. It also provides access to public to the art work and art activities in the region. With this the Akademi hopes to be able to disseminate art and culture in a better, easy and quicker way.
Professor B. N. Goswamy gave away certificates of appreciation to the owners of the design company Intelligaia - Rajiv & Cheena Kaul and Sumit Chauhan, its programmers and to the very active members of the Akademi - Bheem Malhotra, Ritu M. Bansal and Parul Dar, who burnt midnight oil and spent months to execute this task.

Condolence Meeting To Pay Tribute To Tyeb Mehta

Addressing a gathering consisting of audience from various walks of life Diwan Manna, Chairman Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi, said, India had lost one of the most significant artists who made history not only by being the most expensive in terms of currency value but also by being the true representative of the aspirations and expectations of Independent India and its people with the judicious mix of mythology, modernity and modern techniques. He mentioned his distinct contribution to the contemporary Indian Art scene and the special place he occupies in the art history of India as he was one of that rare group of artists who had seen the times of pre independence struggle for freedom (Ghulami), an expectant, enthusiastic, jubilant independent India with complete freedom of expression and the pre and post liberalization periods and its effects on the art and its value in ordinary citizen’s life.
He said Tyeb Mehta was an example of how a true artist could stay unaffected by the admiration, hype and success and an inspiration to many generations of artists.
Viren Tanwar, and Ravinder Sharma spoke about their personal encounters with the artist and the respect they have for his art. Viren shared with audience the moments he spent with him when Tyeb came to his exhibition many years back in Mumbai and gave a pat on his shoulder without uttering a word.
